Southern Girl Gone Midwest

Moving 18 hours away from family and friends has been tough but I feel as though I’ve adjusted quite well. I accepted a position with a hotel the day after Graduation and never looked back. I am a Social Media and Event Coordinator for a hotel in Altoona, IA.

I live with my wonderful cousins and their now 16 month old. They have been kind enough to let me invade their home to help me out. It has been a wonderful arrangement and I am so thankful for their kindness and generosity towards me.

As nice as they are, I am sure me rooming with them has its times where they’d love it if I had friends aside from them. Now we mostly hang out with family or coworkers which pretty much marks them out from my dating options.

My cousins decided they would try and hook me up with a family friend. It lasted about 3 weeks before it just wasn’t the right fit. It was nice to get out of the house and do some things while being with someone who wasn’t family. I’m sure my roomies enjoyed some Bri free time as well.

While enjoying some beverages in our back yard last weekend, my cousin told me to try online dating. I was and still am slightly skeptical because of silly shows like MTV’s Catfish. Well, Monday morning rolls around and my coworker spies a Groupon for Match.com. It was like God was speaking through Groupon. So, after staring at the Groupon for at least 4 hours, I bought it. I registered for Match.com.

Ok so I created a profile. That in and of itself was a slight challenge. I don’t like talking about myself so coming up with creative words to describe who I am was not my cup of tea. So I enlisted the help of my trusty roomie to use some kind words to describe who I was. I didn’t feel as conceited this was. So she made up most of the “in her own words” of my profile.

Well, what I thought would be a couple of days for responses or any action on my profile, turned into minutes. I had winks, likes, and emails coming in and to be honest I was little overwhelmed. I read through the guys profiles and was uncertain how this was really going to play out. I finally decided I’d respond to some emails and see what I get back. A couple of emails went back and forth and the conversations seemed normal which was a positive sign to me. So…then I got asked on my first date…
